STATEMENT FOR THE ART NEWSPAPER GREEK EDITION
Artist-Run Spaces: Possibilities, Limitations and the Way Forward
Text: Jasmin Glaab
Basel, 2019
The artist-run scene is growing and spreading. It is, alongside institutions and galleries, emerging as a third important actor in the art world. The extreme increase in the number of trained artists, curators and art mediators has lead to this development. I am convinced that the artist-run scene will establish itself in the long term, and the sustainability strategies developed in this context are straight forward.
The artist-run scene is characterized by low-budget and flat hierarchies. Most actors keep the costs affordable in order to guarantee a maximum of independence and agility. Cooperations are constantly negotiated anew depending on current developments. A conscious handling of resources such as time, space and money is therefore unavoidable and an important part for artist-run projects. In contrast to the institutionalised and commercialised art world, which requires stability, the artist-run scene is constantly able to convey and reflect on the actual living and working conditions of its actors and their environment. As founder and curator of the artist-run initiative kunsthallekeinbasel my curatorial concept is not oriented towards successful or well-trained artists but offers a platform for side issues or exceptional phenomena in the field of fine arts. I constantly present new artists, thus I convey a broad impression of the current tendencies and I reveal my personal network. The representation of individual positions is pushed into the background in favour of the representation of an entire scene. Where institutions and galleries establish individual positions over the longer term, the artist-run scene represents a broad spectrum of contemporary art acting always on the pulse of time.
I found it desirable that the artist-run scene, with its flat hierarchies and non-commercial orientation, should be understood by the ever-increasing mass of professional artists, curators and educators as a worthy vessel, in which the socially transforming power of art can be lived, experienced and reinvented as a collective moment again and again.

The series "Where're you from?" is the result of a long personal engagement with the vulva and consists of over 30 works. As a young woman, the artist noticed that, like many educated women in her environment, she hardly knows anything about her own sexual organ. Women of all ages even feel a kind of disgust for their own vulva. The colorful vulva sculptures are supposed to allow a humorous dialogue, loosen the taboo and celebrate the diversity of our bodies. With a wink, the title refers to the fact that all people ultimately have the same origins.
Nina Herrmann (*1991, St.Aubin, NE), grew up in Basel City. Herrmann attended the preliminary course of the Académie de Meuron in Neuchâtel (CH) from 2013-2015 and completed a year at the Académie des Arts in Avignon (FR) in 2017/2018 with a focus on modelling and sculpture. In her studio in the centre of Basel she mainly creates figurative sculptures and deals thematically with the human body.

Iasonas Kampanis (GR) | 54 (THE FUNERAL OF HENRI ROUSSEAU)
Iasonas Kampanis, 54 (THE FUNERAL OF HENRI ROUSSEAU). Acrylic on wood, 19 x 14 cm. Athens, 2019.
The artwork 54 is a synthesis of 53 small pieces, a painting recording of an online search for modern art, beginning from 1866, the year Gustave Courbet painted ‘L’Origine du monde’. The research process follows a specific system, starting from the dates of birth or death of artists, classifying them in common weeks and exploring information about their work or life, resulting in a plethora of visual stimuli drawn from image search engines.
Iasonas Kampanis was born in 1985 in Athens, Greece, in a family of artists. Studied jewelry design at the Mokume Institute in Thessaloniki. In 2007, he began working with painting, photography and digital media. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in Greece and the UK. He currently lives and works in Athens.
